“W.A.M?” — Why Always Me?

Public Enemy No. 1 explores the complicated legacy of Mario Balotelli — a player who became one of football’s most recognisable figures while constantly finding himself at the centre of criticism, controversy and hostility.

The “W.A.M?” across the chest is a reference to his iconic “Why Always Me?” celebration, a moment that became synonymous with Balotelli’s relationship with the football world. It wasn't simply a celebration — it captured the feeling of constantly being watched, questioned and singled out.

For Balotelli, that scrutiny existed alongside something far more serious. Throughout his career, he was subjected to racist abuse and discrimination, both from sections of football crowds and within the wider football environment. The attention surrounding him often went beyond his performances, with his identity becoming part of a conversation he never asked to be part of.

“Public Enemy No. 1” is therefore deliberately provocative. It questions why certain players become villains so easily, why some are treated differently, and how race can shape the way footballers are perceived.

The design turns “Why Always Me?” from an iconic celebration into something more reflective — a question about the constant scrutiny, prejudice and expectations that followed Balotelli throughout his career.
